About The Mediation Center

The mission of The Mediation Center is to create opportunity from conflict.

For more than 40 years, The Mediation Center has helped people navigate conflict, strengthen communication, and make important decisions together.

Founded in 1984, The Mediation Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization serving Buncombe, Henderson, Transylvania, and Polk Counties in Western North Carolina through mediation, supervised child family visitation, and conflict resolution training.

We work with individuals, families, organizations, courts, schools, nonprofits, faith communities, businesses, and government agencies.

We believe that conflict is a normal part of life. While conflict is difficult and stressful, it can also create opportunities for understanding, problem-solving, and collaboration when people have the support and tools they need.

Our trained mediators, who are more than 90% volunteers, provide a confidential, voluntary, and non-judgmental process where each person can be heard and share what’s important to them. Mediators facilitate a collaborative process to help participants make decisions and plans to move ahead.

Each year, we help hundreds of people address conflicts related to family relationships, neighborhoods, workplaces, organizations, schools, court matters, and community concerns. We also provide supervised family visitation and safe exchange services that help children maintain important family connections in a safe and supportive setting.

In addition to direct services, The Mediation Center offers training and professional development opportunities that strengthen communication, conflict response, leadership, and collaborative problem-solving skills. We work with nonprofits, attorneys, businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, community groups, and professional associations throughout the region.
